Dear Brothers and Sisters,

On Saturday, April 26, I had the opportunity to concelebrate Pope Francis's funeral Mass. I hadn't planned it. In fact, I had a few days off after Holy Week already organized, as I have done in previous years. When we landed in Rome on the morning of Monday, April 21, the Vatican announced the Pope's death. I spent the following days visiting other places, but I returned to Rome on Friday afternoon. I didn't go to see the Pope in St. Peter's Basilica. It was very crowded. It was reported that 250,000 people saw the Pope in the basilica.

On Saturday, we arrived at the entrance to St. Peter's Square at 6:00 a.m. We priests had a separate entrance area. There were many priests and deacons in line. They checked our credentials at three security checkpoints. We had to bring our white alb, cincture, and a red stole. We finally arrived at our seats at almost 7:30 a.m. Mass would not begin until 10:00 a.m. It was a bit chilly in the square, but we spent the time greeting other priests, praying the morning prayer, and chatting. More than 4,000 priests, 224 cardinals, 750 bishops, and 35 ecumenical representatives attended the Mass. I could see the square quickly filling with pilgrims and faithful. Also ahead of us were the dignitaries and representatives of 130 countries who had sent their delegations. The Vatican has long been accustomed to formal events, but with so many people and different groups of attendees to accommodate, the Mass didn't start promptly, but a few minutes late. It was a beautiful celebration, entrusting the soul of Pope Francis to God and giving thanks for his life and ministry in the Catholic Church.

Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re presided over the funeral and preached the homily with great strength for his 91 years of age. He spoke of Pope Francis and some of his most profound actions and teachings. We all listened in silence. A silence broken several times by the grateful applause of 250,000 souls gathered in St. Peter's Square and millions who participated in the Mass through various means of communication. At the end of the Eucharist, the Pope's coffin was transferred to the Basilica of St. Mary Major, where the statue of Our Lady, Protectress of the Roman People is located, whom he visited every time he left or returned from a trip. He chose to be buried there. The procession through the streets of Rome was attended by an additional 150,000 people, ready in the city streets to applaud as the coffin passed by and shout: "Long live Pope Francis!"

I don't think I will ever forget that beautiful moment in the church. So many elderly, adults, and young people gathered to pray for the soul of our Supreme Pontiff. May God have him in his glory. I join Cardinal Re's words at the funeral, "Pope Francis used to conclude his speeches and meetings by saying: 'Do not forget to pray for me.' Dear Pope Francis, now we ask you to pray for us and from heaven to bless the Church, bless Rome, bless the whole world."

As the novena for Pope Francis concludes, our attention now turns to the election of the new pope. This Wednesday, May 7th, the cardinals will enter into conclave to elect the new pope of the Catholic Church. We, as believers, must pray that the Holy Spirit continues to inspire the cardinals, so that we may continue to have the pope the Church needs in every age. The 8:30 a.m. Mass this Wednesday and every day until the pope is elected will be a special Mass included in the Roman Missal "For the Election of the Pope." May God bless the cardinals and grant us the new pope He desires.

Queridos Hermanos y Hermanas,

El sábado 26 de abril tuve la oportunidad de concelebrar la Misa de Funeral del Papa Francisco. No lo había planeado. De hecho, tenía unos días libres después de Semana Santa ya organizados, como lo he venido haciendo en años anteriores. Cuando aterrizamos en Roma en la mañana del lunes 21 de abril, el Vaticano anunció la muerte del papa. Estuve esos días siguientes visitando otros lugares, pero regresé a Roma el viernes en la tarde. No ingresé a ver al Papa en la Basílica de San Pedro. Había mucha gente. Fue reportado que 250,000 personas vieron al papa en la basílica.

El sábado llegamos a la entrada de la Plaza de San Pedro a las 6 de la mañana. Los sacerdotes teníamos un área de ingreso aparte. Había muchos sacerdotes y diáconos en la fila. Nos revisaron nuestras credenciales en tres anillos de seguridad. Debíamos traer nuestra alba blanca, cíngulo y una estola roja. Finalmente llegamos a nuestras sillas casi a las 7:30 am. La Misa comenzaría hasta las 10 am. En la plaza hacía algo de frío, pero pasamos el tiempo saludando a otros sacerdotes, rezando la oración de la mañana y conversando. Más de 4,000 sacerdotes, 224 cardenales, 750 obispos, y 35 representantes ecuménicos asistimos a la Misa. Pude ver que rápidamente la plaza se iba llenando de peregrinos y fieles. También adelante de nosotros, iban llegando los dignatarios y representantes de 130 países que enviaron sus delegaciones. El Vaticano ha estado acostumbrado a actos protocolarios, pero con tantas personas y distintos grupos de asistentes para acomodar, la Misa no empezó en punto, sino unos pocos minutos más tarde. Fue una hermosa celebración, encomendando a Dios el alma del Papa Francisco y dando gracias por su vida y ministerio en la Iglesia Católica.

El Cardenal Giovanni Battista Re presidió el funeral y predicó la homilía con una fuerza impresionante a sus 91 años de edad. Habló del Papa Francisco y algunos de sus actos y enseñanzas más profundas. Todos lo escuchamos en silencio. Un silencio roto varias veces por los aplausos agradecidos de 250,000 almas reunidas en la Plaza de San Pedro y millones que participaron de la Misa por los distintos medios. Al finalizar la Eucaristía, el ataúd del papa fue trasladado a la Basílica Santa María la Mayor, donde está la imagen de Nuestra Señora Protectora del Pueblo Romano, a quien visitaba cada vez que se iba o regresaba de un viaje. Él escogió ser sepultado allí. La procesión por las calles de Roma tuvo a 150,000 personas más, preparadas en las calles de la ciudad para aplaudir al pasar el féretro y gritar: “Viva el Papa Francisco.”

Pienso que no voy a olvidar ese bonito momento de iglesia. Tantos ancianos, adultos y jóvenes reunidos para orar por el alma de nuestro Sumo Pontífice. Que Dios lo tenga en su gloria. Me uno a las palabras del Cardenal Re en el funeral, “El Papa Francisco solía concluir sus discursos y encuentros diciendo: ‘No se olviden de rezar por mí’. Querido Papa Francisco, ahora te pedimos a ti que reces por nosotros y que desde el cielo bendigas a la Iglesia, bendigas a Roma, bendigas al mundo entero”.

Al concluir el novenario por el Papa Francisco, ahora nuestra atención se torna hacia la elección del nuevo papa. Este miércoles 7 de mayo los cardenales entrarán en cónclave para elegir al nuevo papa de la Iglesia Católica. Nosotros, como creyentes, debemos orar para que el Espíritu Santo siga inspirando a los cardenales, de modo que podamos seguir teniendo el papa que la iglesia necesita en cada época. La Misa de 8:30 am de este miércoles y de cada día hasta que se elija al papa será una Misa especial presente en el Misal Romano “Para la elección del Papa”. Dios bendiga a los cardenales y nos conceda el nuevo papa que Él quiera.
