February 10, 2023Dear Brothers and Sisters,
I want to welcome John Berardi, our new director of music. John has vast experience in liturgical music and he will be working with us in the Eucharists, the school choir and the parish choirs. We've already seen him in the last few weeks, but please welcome him when you see him. You can read his letter on the next page.
This weekend we have the opportunity to commit to the Annual Catholic Appeal held by all parishes in the Archdiocese of Chicago. This campaign is intended to support the different ministries that exist in our particular Catholic church in Cook and Lake counties, as well as reaching other parts of the world in need. I remind you that during the Masses we will listen to Cardinal Cupich and we will make our commitment. You can read more about this campaign by picking up a booklet from the tables in the church. The goal for our parish this year is $47,136, which represents 7% of the collections for the 2021-2022 year. If you are unable to attend Mass, please make your donation at www.annualcatholicappeal.com and choose 'St. Augustine' as your parish.
On Saturday, February 11, took place the Eucharist in English with the anointing of the sick. This Wednesday, February 15, we will have the Eucharist in Spanish with the anointing of the sick at 7 pm. According to the Catechism of the Catholic Church, “The Anointing of the Sick is not a sacrament for those only who are at the point of death. Hence, as soon as anyone of the faithful begins to be in danger of death from sickness or old age, the fitting time for him to receive this sacrament has certainly already arrived." It is also recommended that those who are going to have a surgical procedure, which may put their lives at risk, receive this sacrament. I invite you to consider receiving the Anointing of the Sick when it is offered in the church or when you need it, keeping in mind the reasons given above.
Finally, I invite you to prepare for Lent, which will begin on February 22, Ash Wednesday. May God help us to take advantage of the special times that the Church gives us to delve into our relationship with Christ.

Quiero darle la bienvenida a John Berardi, nuestro nuevo director de música. John tiene una vasta experiencia en música litúrgica y estará trabajando con nosotros en las eucaristías, el coro de la escuela y los coros de la parroquia. Ya lo hemos visto en las últimas semanas, pero por favor denle la bienvenida cuando lo vean. Pueden leer su carta en la siguiente página.
Este fin de semana tenemos la oportunidad de comprometernos con la Campaña Católica Anual que realizan todas las parroquias en la Arquidiócesis de Chicago. Esta campaña tiene como fin apoyar los distintos ministerios que hay en nuestra Iglesia Católica particular en los condados de Cook y Lake, además de alcanzar a otros lugares del mundo en necesidad. Les recuerdo que durante las Misas escucharemos al Cardenal Cupich y haremos nuestro compromiso. Puede leer más acerca de esta campaña tomando un libro de las mesas en la iglesia. El objetivo que le corresponde a nuestra parroquia este año es $47,136, lo cual representa el 7% de las colectas del año 2021-2022. El sábado 11 de febrero tuvimos la eucaristía en inglés con unción de los enfermos. Este miércoles 15 de febrero tendremos la eucaristía en español con unción de los enfermos a las 7 pm. De acuerdo con el Catecismo de la Iglesia Católica, “La Unción de los enfermos no es un sacramento sólo para aquellos que están a punto de morir. Por eso, se considera tiempo oportuno para recibirlo cuando el fiel empieza a estar en peligro de muerte por enfermedad o vejez". También es recomendable que aquellos que van a tener un procedimiento quirúrgico, que tal vez ponga en riesgo su vida, reciban este sacramento. Los invitamos para que consideren recibir la Unción de los Enfermos cuando sea ofrecida en la iglesia o cuando usted la necesite teniendo en cuenta las razones dadas arriba.
Finalmente, los invito a prepararse para la Cuaresma, que comenzará el 22 de febrero, Miércoles de Ceniza. Que Dios nos ayude a aprovechar los tiempos especiales que la Iglesia nos da para adentrarnos en nuestra relación con Cristo.
