Comboni Missionaries to visit our Parish on the weekend of July 29-30

Missionary Cooperation Plan
We will soon be hosting a missionary visitor! The summer Missionary Cooperation Plan is an opportunity for our parish to learn about, support and be inspired by the work of missionaries ministering in another part of the world. We are pleased to receive a visit from Fr. Godwin Kornu, a representative of the Comboni Missionaries on the weekend of July 29-30. The second collection will support their mission.


The Comboni Missionaries of the Heart of Jesus

The Comboni Missionaries of the Heart of Jesus were founded by Saint Daniel Comboni, the first Bishop of Central Africa, in 1867.  Originally, they were a group of priests and brothers from all over Europe doing mission work in Africa under the name of “Institute for the African Missions.” They became a religious society in 1895.  Up to recent years they were popularly know as “Verona Fathers.”  In 1979 the name was changed to the present form to honor both the founder and the spirituality of the society.

Presently the Comboni Missionaries number close to 1,500. There are just as many Comboni Missionary Sisters.  They serve in over thirty countries of Africa , Europe , the Americas and Asia .

The Comboni Missionaries care for the poor and most abandoned people in any area of the world that the Holy See may want to entrust to them.  Their evangelizing method is directed to the liberation of the whole person through the preaching of the Gospel and the institution of social and educational structures, in cooperation with existing resources and in a spirit of service to the local Church. They are very active in the formation of religious and lay leaders, in education, in the field of mass media and, when needed, in relief work and refugee relocation, especially in Africa .

Funds collected during the Missionary Cooperative Plan go mostly into a “small mission projects fund” that sponsors people-related projects in Africa and Latin America .  Currently many of these projects are directed COVID relief, refugee resettlement in the Sudan (Darfur included), Uganda and Congo, AIDS prevention and AIDS orphans assistance, training of local missionaries both lay and religious, women’s education at the secondary level, and establishing wells and other sources of safe water for desert dwellers in Ethiopia, Eritrea and Kenya.

In North America the Comboni Missionaries have a small contingent of about 25 members in the Archdioceses of Chicago, Cincinnati, Los Angeles and Newark and in the Diocese of Hamilton, Ontario, Canada.  They work among minority groups, educate young people for service in the foreign missions and conduct programs of global mission awareness.  The COMBONI MISSIONS magazine is an integral part of this effort.  Their main center in North America is located at 1318 Nagel Road , Cincinnati , OH   45255 .

Plan de Cooperación Misionera
¡Pronto seremos anfitriones de un visitante misionero! El Plan de Cooperación Misionera del verano es una oportunidad para que nuestra parroquia aprenda, apoye y sea inspirada por el trabajo de los misioneros trabajando en otra parte del mundo. Estamos contentos de recibir una visita del P. Godwin Kornu, representante de los Misioneros Combonianos el fin de semana del 29 y 30 de julio. La segunda colecta apoyará la misión que prestan alrededor del mundo.


Los Misioneros Combonianos del Corazón de Jesús

Los Misioneros Combonianos del Corazón de Jesús fueron fundados por San Daniel Comboni, el primer obispo de África Central, en 1867. Originalmente, ellos eran un grupo de sacerdotes y hermanos provenientes de Europa haciendo haciendo trabajo misionero bajo el nombre de “Instituto para las Misiones Africanas.” Pasaron a ser una sociedad religiosa en 1895. Hasta años recientes ellos eran popularmente conocidos como “Padres de Verona.” En 1979 el nombre fue cambiado a la forma presente para honrar a ambos, al fundador y a la espiritualidad del Instituto.

Actualmente los Misioneros Combonianos son alrededor de 1,500 miembros, al igual que las Misioneras Combonianas en número. Prestan su servicio misionero en alrededor de 30 países de África, Europa, las Américas y Asia.

Los Misioneros Combonianos son llamados a servir a los más pobres y abandonados en cualquier parte del mundo que la Santa Sede les quiera confiar. Su método de evangelización se caracteriza por la búsqueda de la liberación de toda la persona a través de la predicación del Evangelio y la institución de estructuras sociales y de educación, en cooperación con los recursos existentes y en espíritu de servicio a la Iglesia local. Son muy activos en la formación de religiosos y laicos lideres, en la educación, en el campo de los medios de comunicación y cuando se necesita en trabajo de socorro y reubicación de refugiados, especialmente en África.

Los fondos colectados durante el plan de cooperación misionera va destinado en su mayoría al fondo de pequeños proyectos de misión que patrocina proyectos relacionados con las personas en África y América Latina. Actualmente muchos de estos proyectos están dirigidos al alivio del COVID, reasentamiento de refugiados en el Sudan (incluido Darfur). Uganda y el Congo prevención del SIDA, asistencia de huérfanos a causa del SIDA, formación de misioneros locales, educación de mujeres tanto laicas como religiosas en un nivel secundario y estableciendo pozos y otras fuentes de agua para pozos del desierto en Etiopia, Eritrea y Kenia.

En Norte América los Misioneros Combonianos tienen un pequeño contingente de alrededor de 25 miembros en la Arquidiócesis de Chicago, Cincinnati, Los Ángeles y Newark y en la Diócesis de Hamilton, Ontario Canada. Ellos trabajan entre grupos minoritarios, educación de jóvenes para el servicio en países extranjeros y dirigen programas de concientización sobre la misión global.
